What education gives you is time and a different kind of pressure. In industry, the pressures are from the client, the market and making a profit. Design is a business, and as such, it’s difficult to remove yourself form those pressures to give you the space you need to explore a design. Education gives you this space.
I think that’s an excellent point. Education should give you the space (and tools) to think more deeply about things. That’s part of the problem that I have with a lot of “technical training.” It gives you the techniques, but not the space.
